Moy Park tackles North Africa’s highest mountain!
A team of adventurous employees from Moy Park, one of the UK & Europe's leading food companies, is taking on the challenge of a lifetime this October when they will trek to the top of North Africa's highest mountain in aid of Farm Africa. The Moy Park team will be taking on Mount Toubkal in Morocco to raise funds for Farm Africa, a charity which is tackling the roots of hunger in rural Africa by giving African farmers the skills and tools they need to feed Africa's people. Fundraising for worthy causes is nothing new for Northern Ireland's largest food company. Last year its Chief Executive, Nigel Dunlop, joined a team of UK food executives in a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Farm Africa. Moy Park is now thrilled to be furthering its support of Farm Africa by committing a whole team of its employees for the charity's latest mountaineering challenge. The three day trek to the summit, which stands at 4167 metres above sea level, will present a hugely demanding challenge for the team. They will set out from a remote village in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, and reaching the summit will test their endurance to the limit. Getting to the top of Toubkal is the equivalent of scaling Europe's tallest building, The Shard in London, thirteen and a half times. The team will also have to cope with reduced oxygen and severe fatigue as they near the summit. Welcoming the announcement of the challenge Caolon Brady, one of the climbers and Business Unit Leader, Moy Park Craigavon said: "The team at Moy Park is thrilled to be involved with such a worthy cause. This year's Farm Africa mountaineering challenge, to climb to the summit of Toubkal, will give our team members the opportunity to get involved in something we have never attempted before. Climbing North Africa's highest peak will be a real test of our stamina and team work, but we are all extremely excited about taking on the challenge. "Moy Park plays an active role in communities home and abroad and we work with a range of charities, community and sports organisations. Farm Africa aims to give farmers in rural African communities the opportunity to learn skills to provide food for local people - and as a leading player in the agri-food sector, fundraising for Farm Africa is a perfect fit for Moy Park. We are confident that with the continued support of our friends, colleagues and local communities we will reach, and hopefully exceed, our fundraising target." The Moy Park team will be joined for the challenge by teams from the UK Food Sector in a strong demonstration of the sector's support for smallholder farmers in Africa. They will be sending live updates and photos from the mountain and it will be possible to follow the team's progress in real time on Twitter via the hashtag #takeontoubkal. Farm Africa is hugely excited that Moy Park is taking on the Toubkal challenge. Looking forward to the climb the charity's Head of Community and Events Fundraising, Cathy Whiteman, said: "We are thrilled that Moy Park is continuing its support for Farm Africa by taking on Mount Toubkal this year. The funds they raise will help us continue striving towards our vision of a prosperous rural Africa, free from hunger. It will be a hugely challenging trek and we hope that people dig deep to show their support for all the hard work and sore muscles that the team will have to go through!" The Moy Park team: James Colley, Factory Manager, Anwick Susan Baird, Health & Safety Assistant, Dungannon Caolon Brady, Business Unit Leader, Craigavon Chris Boardman, Business Unit Leader, Grantham Photos of all the Moy Park trekkers are available on request. The itinerary: Day 1 - Thursday 18 October: Depart London Heathrow. Arrive Marrakesh. Day 2 - Friday 19: Drive to Imlil village, commence trek. Camp overnight. Day 3 - Saturday 20: Climb to the summit. Then start descent. Camp overnight. Day 4 - Sunday 21: Descend to Imlil, and drive to Marrakesh. Day 5 - Monday 22: Return to London. Chicken tops Northern Ireland taste buds
It's official! More than three quarters of people in Northern Ireland prefer chicken to any other meat, a poll on behalf of Moy Park, provider of fresh, locally farmed and produced poultry has found. The survey revealed that Northern Ireland consumers aren't prepared to 'wing it' when deciding which meat makes it to the family table, with taste, health benefits and versatility the top three reasons why local people choose chicken as their favourite. The public were also asked to voice their opinions on the chicken dish that really tickles the taste buds and the top 10 included contenders such as, chicken and broccoli bake, marinated chicken fillets, perennial pleasers Chicken Maryland, Chicken Kiev and eastern inspired sweet and sour chicken and chicken stir fry – but flying to the top of the coop, were a traditional roast chicken with all the trimmings and a spicy chicken curry. Paul Burch, Moy Park Accounts Director Ireland, said: "We are delighted to see that the results really speak for themselves - Chicken is NI's favourite meat! Chicken is a versatile and convenient meat and represents great value for money, which is why it has always remained popular and tends to grow in popularity in times of recession. Whilst sales of chicken breast fillets remain very strong, we are also seeing growth in dark meat - legs, drumsticks and thighs - thanks to the barbeque season and growing demand for "foodie" ingredients. At the same time, some consumers are buying bigger fresh birds, which provide even better value for money and see a household through a Sunday dinner and mid-week meals. "Moy Park has launched a new range of fresh breaded, large fresh chickens and ready to cook meals. We are always looking at ways to adapt and grow in line with consumer trends and in Northern Ireland there is a strong preference for locally sourced food. We also recognise that consumers are demanding healthy food that is quick to cook to compliment today's busy lifestyles, which is why we have developed both fresh and convenience products under the Moy Park brand - all made with 100% locally sourced chicken." Moy Park’s new product range is available in stores across Northern Ireland. For more information and to view Moy Park’s full range of tasty chicken recipes please visit www.moypark.ie.

Duchy Originals organic chicken from Moy Park has been launched in almost 100 Waitrose stores across the UK, all of which is produced by farmers in Northern Ireland who have worked in partnership with Moy Park over many years. Bessvale Farm is a traditional family farm where Mr Tuft and his son Jonathan have been rearing organic poultry since 2001. "We are committed to sustainable farming and have seen the benefits it provides for the birds and for our business" says Mr Tuft. "Our emphasis is on bird health, wellbeing and welfare. The birds are produced on this and other farms so that they have plenty of space to roam. All our Duchy Originals Organic brood chicken houses have double glazed windows so from an early age the birds can enjoy natural light. The temperature in the brood houses is controlled as the birds grow so they become acclimatised for their life roaming outdoors and we enrich the environment for the birds with perches and bales of straw. All feed is organic and once the birds are old enough to roam outdoors, trees, hedges and fences provide shelter and give the bird a sense of security" he said. During his visit to Bessvale Farm, His Royal Highness spent time talking to Mr Tuft and his family in their 17th Century thatched farmhouse and toured the 230 acre farm which produces organic chicken for the 'Duchy Originals from Waitrose' brand. Waste plan hatches savings for Moy Park
To mark World Environment Day 2011, which is celebrated across the globe on the 5th June, poultry company Moy Park has reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill from 80% to just 10% in 12 months, thanks to a new partnership with waste management specialist Biffa. Six of Moy Park's 15 manufacturing, milling and hatchery sites across the UK have already achieved the ultimate goal of sending zero waste to landfill with more sites set to follow. Commenting on the project Moy Park group environmental management advisor Colin Wilkinson said: "Sending zero waste to landfill is a top priority for our business, it helps us to fulfil our environmental ambitions, and it's important to our customers. We are committed to working with Biffa to achieve 96% recycling across the group in the second quarter of 2011, with the aim of achieving the ambitious 'zero waste' status by the end of the year." Biffa Integrated Waste Management general manager Edward Pigg said: "This project has been made possible by Moy Park's dedication and commitment to reducing waste. Without their enthusiasm there is no way we could have six sites to 0% waste to landfill in just a year. It shows the massive recycling potential for food manufacturers. Edward Pigg added: "Moy Park's waste is being segregated by material, its value is being maximised, and where things cannot be effectively recycled it is being used to generate energy from waste." Biffa is providing Moy Park with a complete 'Integrated Waste Management' package. This includes Biffa staff working from Moy Park's sites and the appointment of 'waste champions' to each site to find new opportunities for further recycling.
